What is prostate artery embolization?

Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive treatment used to reduce the size of an enlarged prostate without entering the urethra. The procedure works by decreasing blood flow to the prostate gland. During PAE, a physician makes a tiny puncture in either the wrist or groin artery and guides a small catheter through the blood vessels to the arteries that supply the prostate.

Once the catheter is in place, microscopic particles are injected into the prostate arteries to block blood flow. By limiting the delivery of oxygen and nutrients, the prostate gradually shrinks over time. This reduction in size helps relieve pressure on the urethra and improves urinary symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

What are the benefits of PAE?

  • Minimally Invasive: PAE is performed entirely within the body’s vascular system; only a pin-sized access through the wrist or groin is required.
  • Fast Recovery: As an outpatient procedure, no incision or cutting is required with PAE. Most patients may return to normal activities a few days after the procedure.
  • Effective BPH Symptom Relief: PAE is clinically shown to improve LUTS (lower urinary tract symptoms) such as frequency of urination, nocturia (waking up to urinate at night), weak urine stream and urgency.
  • Preserves Sexual Function: Traditional surgical treatments for BPH such as TURP surgery have a high risk of sexual side effects. Unlike many other treatments, PAE has been shown to preserve sexual function.

Who is eligible for PAE?

PAE is recommended for men who:

  • Have moderate to severe urinary symptoms for whom medication has not worked to resolve these symptoms
  • Are looking for a minimally invasive alternative to surgery and one that does not involve treatment through the penis
  • Have prostate gland enlargement too big for surgery or other treatments
  • Wish to preserve sexual function and quality of life
  • Do not wish to have to use a foley drainage catheter
