What is plantar fasciitis embolization?

Plantar fasciitis embolization (PFE) is an advanced, minimally invasive treatment designed to target the inflammation responsible for chronic heel pain. In longstanding cases of plantar fasciitis, small abnormal blood vessels can develop around the plantar fascia through a process known as neovascularization. These vessels are believed to contribute to persistent inflammation and pain. PFE works by selectively reducing blood flow to these abnormal vessels while maintaining healthy circulation to the rest of the foot.

What other treatment options for plantar fasciitis do you perform?

At Pacific Vascular Access Care, our interventional radiologists provide advanced minimally invasive treatment options for patients who continue to experience pain despite therapies such as stretching, physical therapy, orthotics, or injections. In addition to PFE, we perform additional treatments for plantar fasciitis such as posterior tibial nerve blocks and peripheral nerve stimulation. These treatments work by disrupting pain signals that travel from the heel to the brain.

The targeted procedures offered by our experienced team are designed to address the underlying source of pain, helping patients return to comfortable movement without surgery and with little downtime.

Benefits of minimally invasive treatments for plantar fasciitis

  • Fast Recovery: Outpatient procedures do not require general anesthesia nor a long recovery like with surgery. You can return to normal activities in 1 to 2 days.
  • No Large Incisions: Only a tiny needle puncture (similar to a blood draw) is required to gain access to the bloodstream. As a result, there is no scarring as with surgery.
  • Long-Lasting Relief: By targeting the underlying cause of plantar fasciitis pain, long-term relief is achieved for years.

Who is eligible for minimally invasive plantar fasciitis treatment?

PFE or our other treatments for plantar fasciitis may be appropriate for those who:

  • Have localized heel pain lasting 6 months or longer
  • Have confirmed plantar fasciitis on exam and imaging
  • Experience persistent pain despite conservative treatment, such as stretching, physical therapy, orthotics, night splints, medications or injections
  • Have pain that significantly limits walking, standing or daily activities
