What is genicular artery embolization?

Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment designed to relieve chronic knee pain, especially in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The procedure works by selectively blocking small blood vessels, called genicular arteries, that supply blood to inflamed areas within the knee. Reducing this abnormal blood flow can help decrease inflammation and improve pain symptoms.

GAE is typically performed on an outpatient basis by our interventional radiologist. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia with a light “twilight” sedation for comfort. A small catheter is inserted through a tiny puncture in the wrist or groin artery and carefully guided to the genicular arteries using advanced imaging technology.

Once the catheter is positioned, microscopic particles are injected to reduce blood flow to the inflamed tissues of the knee. By limiting excess blood supply associated with inflammation, GAE may help reduce pain, improve joint function and potentially slow the progression of cartilage degeneration.

What are the benefits of GAE?

  • Minimally Invasive: Unlike surgery, no large incisions are required, and there is no scarring.
  • Effective Pain Relief: Most patients experience significant pain relief within weeks to months after the procedure.
  • Fast Recovery: Unlike surgery, that requires many weeks of recovery, patients can resume normal activities within a few days of the procedure.
  • Outpatient Convenience: The GAE procedure is performed in our comfortable and convenient outpatient center, and patients can return home the same day.

Who is eligible for GAE?

GAE is recommended for those who:

  • Have chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis and have not found relief with conservative treatment such as medication, injections or physical therapy
  • Are not yet candidates for knee replacement surgery or those who wish to avoid surgery
  • Are seeking a way to relieve pain, maintain mobility and improve their quality of life
  • Are experiencing bleeding in the knee joint before or after knee surgery
