What are chronic hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the lower rectum or anus. If they persist for months or recur over time, they are considered chronic. Hemorrhoids may be internal (inside the body) or external (protruding from the body).

What causes hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids develop when there is ongoing pressure on the veins in the lower rectum or anus. The repeated strain weakens the vein walls, causing them to bulge. Hemorrhoids are often linked to factors like prolonged straining, constipation, pregnancy, or sitting for long periods, as well as long-term diarrhea.

What are the symptoms of chronic hemorrhoids?

  • Pain and discomfort
  • Persistent itching or irritation
  • Bleeding during bowel movements

How are chronic hemorrhoids diagnosed?

  • Physical exam – Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, as well as bowel habits and other lifestyle factors that could contribute to the condition. They may then perform a digital rectal examination.
  • Anoscope – A small instrument that looks inside the rectum can provide a doctor with visual evidence of hemorrhoids.
  • Colonoscopy – A scope is inserted into the rectum with a small camera at the end. This test is typically used to detect or rule out colorectal cancer.

Treatment for chronic hemorrhoids

Lifestyle and diet changes

This includes increasing fiber intake, drinking more water, exercising and avoiding straining during bowel movements.

Over-the-counter treatments

These include creams, ointments or suppositories to reduce itching, swelling and discomfort. Warm sitz baths can also soothe irritation.

Hemorrhoidectomy

This is a surgical procedure performed through the rectum to remove the hemorrhoids.

Stapled hemorrhoidopexy

This less invasive surgical procedure uses a specialized circular stapler to remove a ring of excess tissue, lifting the hemorrhoid back into its normal position and reducing its blood supply.

Rubber band ligation

A common, minimally invasive procedure, rubber band ligation works by placing a medical-grade rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. This cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid, causing it to wither and fall off over time.

Hemorrhoidal artery embolization

This minimally invasive option, performed by the doctors at Pacific Vascular Access Care, works by blocking the blood supply to the hemorrhoids, causing them to shrink and symptoms to reduce.
