What is uterine fibroid embolization?

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive, image-guided treatment used to treat uterine fibroids, which are benign (noncancerous) growths in the uterus. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, so hospitalization is not required. It is performed using local anesthesia combined with a “twilight sedation” to ensure patient comfort.

During the procedure, a specially trained doctor known as an interventional radiologist creates a small pinhole access in the wrist or groin artery and advances a thin microcatheter into the blood vessels that supply the fibroids. Tiny embolic particles are then delivered through the catheter to block these arteries and cut off blood flow to the fibroid tissue. Without a blood supply, the fibroids shrink, leading to a significant improvement in symptoms.

What are the benefits of UFE?

  • Minimally Invasive: Unlike surgical options like hysterectomy and myomectomy, there are no large incisions, resulting in less pain, no scarring and a faster recovery. UFE is performed on an outpatient basis so patients can return home the same day as their procedure.
  • Symptom Relief: Those who have UFE experience significant symptom relief, such as decreased pain, discomfort and excessive bleeding.
  • Preserves the Uterus: UFE is a viable alternative to hysterectomy, recommended by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG). Maintaining the uterus can help maintain optimum estrogen and progesterone hormone levels.

UFE may be appropriate for women who:

  • Have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids
  • Have symptoms such as
    • Heavy menstrual bleeding
    • Pelvic pain or pressure
    • Frequent urination or bladder pressure
    • Bloating or abdominal enlargement
    • Experiencing pain during intercourse
  • Are experiencing a decreased quality of life
  • Wish to avoid hysterectomy or more invasive procedures
