What is hemorrhoidal artery embolization?

Hemorrhoidal artery embolization (HAE), also called hemorrhoidal rectal artery embolization, is a minimally invasive and non-surgical treatment that relieves symptoms caused by hemorrhoids by reducing their blood supply. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, allowing patients to return home the same day without hospitalization. It is typically completed under local anesthesia with a light “twilight” sedation.

During the procedure, our interventional radiologist creates a tiny access point in the wrist or groin artery and inserts a small microcatheter into the bloodstream and advances it to the blood vessels supplying the hemorrhoids. Tiny particles and/or coils are then delivered through the catheter to block these vessels and reduce excessive blood flow. As blood flow decreases, the hemorrhoids gradually shrink, helping relieve symptoms such as bleeding, swelling and discomfort.

Hemorrhoids are made up of enlarged blood vessels known as the Corpus Cavernosum Recti (CCR). By embolizing the hemorrhoidal arteries, pressure within these vessels is reduced, which can improve symptoms and promote healing. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, recovery is typically quick, and most patients are able to resume normal activities shortly afterward.

What are the benefits of HAE?

  • Minimally Invasive: HAE does not require any surgical incisions in the rectum or anus, and no general anesthesia is required.
  • Effective Relief: Most patients experience significant symptom relief, such as decreased pain, itching, bleeding and discomfort in a few weeks after the procedure.
  • Fast Recovery: A return to normal activities within a day or two after the procedure is likely for most patients. Unlike surgery, there is no painful recovery that is made worse by the need for daily bowel movements.
  • Preserves Healthy Tissue: By precisely targeting the hemorrhoid(s), there is no trauma to the surrounding healthy tissue remains.
  • Outpatient Procedure: HAE is performed in our comfortable and convenient non-hospital environment.

Who is eligible for HAE?

HAE may be appropriate for those who:

  • Have chronic hemorrhoids with symptoms that have not been helped by conservative treatments such as creams, supplements or dietary changes
  • Wish to have symptom relief with minimal downtime or are looking for a non-surgical solution
  • Prefer a minimally invasive treatment that is not performed through the anus and rectum, and avoids potential completions in this area
